How Vision Pro Headset Transforms Our Reality
by AREYES Studio on Jun 08, 2023
Finally Apple presented the Vision Pro Headset that can blow your mind and make you forget about all the devices you ever cared about. Alexandr Surnin (CEO of AREYES Studio) shared his thoughts on how Apple’s new headset will impact the industry. In this blog post we will share a short summary of it.
After Apple’s recent gew-dropping presentation of mixed reality glasses, there is direct was flooded with questions about how it will affect our bright digital everyday life.
Let’s take a moment to go back to the ancient (in terms of the digital world) year 2007 and remember the first presentation of the iPhone1. By that time, smartphones as a phenomenon already existed, and the majority used them. But Steve Jobs held in his hands a device that qualitatively changed our perception of user experience. Because at the core of everything was philosophy. It was as if Apple delved into the minds of average people, reimagined their needs, presented a new device capable of bringing them to the next level, and taught people how to use it. And other companies had nothing to do but to copy them.
Meta, Pico, Varjo, and HTC have been trying to reinvent mixed reality for years, while Apple patiently waited for its moment to shine. All these companies were determined to create innovative interactive experiences, while Apple remained silent in its quest for a deeper meaning. However, if we look there is a products from other companies were quite impressive at the time. For instance, in 2019, Meta (formerly Facebook) introduced the first virtual reality headset model. Despite the success of the Oculus Quest headset, which sold like hotcakes, Apple continued to explore the real day-to-day needs of people.
It became clear that the inventions that amazed us in the movies of the 90s (hello, flying skate!) are not far away. After all, if we have the opportunity to let into real life those technologies that we could only fantasize about, we will give up screens, displays, and watches without hesitation. At a certain point, it became clear that if we have the opportunity to display everything on glasses, then we no longer need other devices, we no longer need anything. This concept was discussed in movies from our childhood: if everything is right before our eyes, we don’t need anything else, and Apple came from this direction.
At a time when other companies were looking for a way to entertain the audience even more and break the bank, Apple went step by step in the direction of transforming our lives and giving us the next generation interface. Strategy matters, right?
Apple’s positioning is that a person ceases to be just a user. The company sees its product not as a radical replacement of old devices with new ones but as the creator of a new unique experience, which is the future. Tim Cook notes that Apple is presenting a spatial computer, not an AR or VR headset.
The company sees the Vision Pro Headset as a constant-use device containing everything we need to make our lives easier. The headset displays 4K screens for each eye, along with a total of 12 cameras and 5 sensors. The Vision Pro, which looks like a pair of trendy ski goggles, also features the phenomenal performance of Apple’s M2, the processing capabilities of which make the glasses a separate computer, and a new dual-chip called the R1 that works with data at incredible speed.
The question arises, why did Apple guess to do this, and other companies are still just entertaining us? It’s straightforward: none of the companies listed above can match Apple’s technological power, computing capabilities, and ecosystem strength. They took and pushed all the features of phones, tablets, and laptops into a new shell. Simply because they can handle it.
Let’s summarize it for two categories of audiences. Developers and average people and creative minds whom love Apple products.
What should people far from the developers community expect in the coming years? Well, it’s time to start saving $3,499 because the process of eradicating modern devices with AR glasses has already begun. In the near future, a new ecosystem and iOS will emerge, requiring individuals to adapt, rethink, and fully integrate them into their lives to no to be left behind. After all, once upon a time, when, as in a fairy tale, the first mobile phones just appeared, people saw them as something out of fantasy. But later, the devices became cheaper (forget about $3,499) and more necessary in daily routine, and now the only people who don’t have a smartphone are children when their parents punish them.
As for those who have connected their professional life with the world of technology, you need to go with the flow. There will be a slow eradication of old devices and the applications that serve them, which is kind of ironic because Apple will devalue itself. The glasses will be available for purchase in 2024, but the company will open several product testing centers worldwide for developers already this summer. Their name is Apple Vision Pro Developer Labs, so get in line.
Eventually, a new ecosystem will emerge, requiring the development of capable apps to break virtual and visual barriers and improve the quality of life to ensure that reality can be even more fantastic than in the favorite films of the 90s.
